Trainline, the independent retail platform for train and bus travel, today announces it has entered into an agreement to acquire the Barcelona-based Trenes.com. Founded in 2014, Trenes.com is an online retailer of train and bus tickets. In 2024, Trenes.com sold tickets to over 350,000 customers.
Leveraging Platform One, Trainline’s global tech platform that connects 270+ rail and bus operators, and over 25 years of tech innovation and expertise, Trainline will deliver more for customers by enhancing the Trenes.com user experience to provide for a more seamless ticketing experience while amplifying choice for customers, particularly in Spain. This strategic acquisition will also enable Trainline to integrate the capabilities and talent of Trenes.com.
“The Spanish rail market is leading the way in the liberalisation of European rail, which is driving growth and delivering greater accessibility and variety of service for customers. Trenes.com and Trainline are united in the same mission, to facilitate access to the best travel options at competitive prices, driving more people to choose the sustainable option of rail travel. Our acquisition of Trenes.com promises more to Spanish customers and the investment will mean Trenes.com will be able to benefit from our tech innovation and marketing capabilities. In turn, more customers will be able to find and compare the cheapest and most convenient travel options and promote modal shift”
Pedro Garcia, General Manager, EU
“I’m immensely proud of the business we have built and the customers we serve. I am very excited about its next leg of growth as part of the broader Trainline business, helping expand the brand’s reach so that it can help more people to book their rail and bus travel”
Pere Sallent Costajussà, Cofounder and CEO of Trenes.com.
This transaction is subject to regulatory approval from Spain’s National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC). Closing of the transaction is expected in the coming weeks and the financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
