We’re Europe’s leading rail platform, selling rail and coach tickets to millions worldwide. We enable customers to search, book and manage their journeys all in one place through our website and nifty mobile app.

Our history

Trainline’s journey

Our origin. Trainline is set up by the Virgin Group, tasked with saving customers money on train tickets. At this point, we didn’t sell any tickets online — it was all over the phone, hence the Train Line. Smart, we know.

Our website goes live (the first ticket-selling website in the UK rail industry!)

For the first time ever, customers could print their tickets at home, thanks to us. This was a groundbreaker — far from the industry standard it is now.

The age of the smart phone. We launched our first app, beginning a new phase of development and mobile-friendly product features like eTickets and live journey planners. Our app was pretty cool then, and it’s pretty cool now. We like to stay consistent.

We acquire Captain Train, based in Paris. In doing so, we combined two of Europe’s leading digital rail platforms to become the new European market leader. We also launched PriceBot, giving our customers access to the cheapest tickets available to them on their routes. Bon voyage!

For the first time ever, more than 50% of our UK ticket sales were mobile-based! The digital age is underway.

Trainline is floated on the London Stock Exchange, and soon joins the FTSE 250 index of mid-cap firms.

Jody Ford joins Trainline as our new CEO.

We launched Platform One, the new identity for the technology that powers everything we do at Trainline.

We became Europe’s most downloaded rail travel app, delivering over £5 billion in net ticket sales and our international business hits the £1bn ticket sales landmark.

Our purpose

How we’re making a difference

Rail provides a cleaner, greener alternative to flying and driving. It creates 87% less CO2 emissions than air travel, and 67% less CO2 emissions compared with car travel, per passenger.
 
That’s why sustainability is fundamental to our purpose. We make travel easier through our technology and data, empowering people to make travel choices that are better for the environment.

We’re always rolling out green features, making it simpler for our customers to access transparent emissions data. And in doing so, we’re helping them to shrink their carbon footprints. Through features like ‘My Sustainability Story’ and ‘Super Routes’, customers can track their own CO2 emissions, choose routes that save time, money and CO2, and see the environmental impact of their travel choices.

Our sustainability team is dedicated to encouraging modal shift; promoting rail as a more sustainable way to travel. In 2022, we launched ‘I Came By Train’, a collective movement to promote the sustainability of rail and drive people to reduce their carbon footprint.

We’re taking urgent action to help limit the rise in global temperatures, by becoming one of the first tech companies to have our ambitious, science-based net-zero targets officially approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Our commitments cover direct emissions from our own operations, and emissions created in our supply chain.

We’re also part of the FTSE4Good Index, which recognises our dedication to sustainable practices and positive corporate behaviour.
